Side Line Position

The side lying position is useful for mothers recovering from a cesarean birth or who have had an episiotomy. This is a great position for resting and nursing but should only be utilized if mother if awake and alert. In this position, both the infant and mother are lying on their sides. When in this position, ensure mother’s head is supported by a pillow and there is a pillow between her knees to ensure proper back alignment. Additionally, the infant should have support behind the length of their body to ensure they stay close to the mother.

  • Position another pillow behind the mother to support her back

  • Top Arm:

    • Option 2: Mother’s hand can be used to help support the breast in a “C” hold to assist with infant latch

Infant:

  • Infant is placed lying on side facing mother with ears, shoulders, and hips aligned
