Biological Nursing "aka"
Laid Back Position
The term “laid back” position can be used interchangeable with “biological nursing”. Breastfeeding in a laid back position, is the only position that addresses an infants natural instinct to latch. Evidence states that the laid-back breastfeeding position allows infants to breastfeed more effectively and has been stated as a more comfortable position for mothers, especially in the early days and weeks. Mothers who have a forceful let down, can utilize the laid back position to slow flow of breastmilk. Laid back position has been beneficial for infants experiencing reflux by having them in an up right prone position.
The laid back position should only be used with infants in the Special Care Nursery during their stay. It is not recommended for normal healthy newborns within the first 48 hours of life.
